Good People of vitruta: Güneş Özgeç
Introducing Güneş Özgeç, the newest member of Good People of vitruta! We admired Güneş from afar until last summer when we had the chance to meet and chat at the Paradiso Fest held at Giritli. After that, thanks to our mutual friend Melis Güven, another member of Good People, we continued to connect, and Güneş even joined us for the Good People New Year gathering at Tavern. Finally, we found a day to meet up in Pera, where we had a fantastic photo shoot and enjoyed a lovely Friday afternoon filled with great conversation. I hope you enjoy reading about it as much as we enjoyed the experience!
Welcome to Good People, Güneş! Let's start with the classic question: Who is Güneş Özgeç? How did it all begin, how is it going now, and what are you up to?
Thank you for the warm welcome! I'm someone who loves art and nature, and my main field is music. I’ve always been this way; I was more of a free-spirited child who enjoyed activities like painting, singing in made-up languages, publishing magazines, and writing and staging plays. After elementary school, I entered the conservatory, which made things more serious. I found the seriousness challenging but managed to get through it, and that’s how I became the person I am today.
I’ve also been involved in the world of classical music; I’ve taught lessons, played at events and openings, and even performed with a symphony orchestra. Simultaneously, I’ve continued doing voiceovers, which I started as a child. I’m still adapting and singing songs for original animated films, combining my skills in music and voiceover.
Initially, I wanted to be a composer, and while pursuing that desire, I came across local animations. When they asked me if I could do music production, I eagerly said, “Of course!” and quickly learned Ableton, diving into the field headfirst.
In addition to all this, I write and arrange my songs with everything I've learned, which is where I feel most free and able to push myself creatively, fulfilling my dreams. This has also led me to work on music production for other friends.
What inspires you when writing your songs and making music?
Coming here today, for example, inspired me a lot; I’m someone who tends to stick to my routines, and sometimes life can become monotonous. Today, on the ferry rocking wildly in the windy weather, sipping my coffee while coming to vitruta, trying on beautiful clothes, posing for photos, answering these questions, and then sharing a glass of wine and laughter with my loved ones... This delightful and slightly tipsy daytime experience has really inspired me, so thank you!
Do you have a new single coming out soon? We’d love to share it through vitruta! :)
On April 7th, I’ll be releasing a single titled “Toksik,” which tells a toxic love story, as the name suggests. I wrote the lyrics, composed the music, arranged, and produced it all myself. I really enjoy creating a song from start to finish, but the process can be quite painful. It’s a cycle of blood, sweat, and tears leading to relief and satisfaction, followed by the start of the cycle all over again.
What does a typical day look like for you?
If I don’t have any outside commitments like concerts or interviews, I’m usually at home with plenty to do—whether it’s music for others or my own projects. I spend my time working at the computer with my instruments, playing games, tending to flowers and cats, and when I feel social, I meet friends for coffee. After that, I return home to watch a series or movie to unwind.
What are your favorite places to spend time in Istanbul?
I love Istanbul; walking by the seaside, taking the ferry, and exploring the old parts of the city are some of my favorite activities. However, in my daily life, my favorite and regular spot is a place called Dün, and I also enjoy spending evenings at Bina.
What have you been watching, reading, and listening to lately?
I recently came across Kelsey Lu’s Blood album and really enjoyed a few of the songs—I've been playing it on repeat. Last night, I watched Aftersun on Mubi. Today, a friend gifted me Özel Bir Yaz by the Tamakis, which I’ll be reading.
To wrap up, what are your three favorite brands at vitruta?
I really love Rains, American Vintage, and VEJA for their sustainable approach, which resonates with me a lot.
